French fashion designer Pierre Cardin was known for his exceptional aesthetic and brave decisions that greatly influenced the world of fashion. His creations were timeless yet futuristic and opened the door for many other designers to follow their dreams.
Cardin started his career with sheer passion and meager means, After moving to Paris, he worked on the set of the film Beauty and the Beast with the director Jean Cocteau. Cocteau introduced him to Christian Dior and by 1950 Cardin had established his own label.
Cardin was the first to introduce minimalism in avantgarde and haute couture, while he also put his vision to test in unisex wear, changing the world of fashion drastically. Before the world knew it, Cardin was designing for big names like Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot and the Beatles, which garnered him acclamation from his peers and the fashion world alike.
Another one of his biggest feats, Nasa commissioned Cardin to create a spacesuit on which he stated, “The dresses I prefer are those I invent for a life that does not yet exist.”
Pierre Cardin was also one of the first designers to explore the market worldwide and bring high fashion to the masses. He was not only a designer who knew how to cut and sew, despite an army of people working for him but he also had a clear vision of how to expand his business, a genius at marketing, Cardin licensed companies to mass produce his creations. This move was extremely controversial for that time and was looked down upon by the fashion fraternity but Cardin knew exactly what he was doing and what he wanted to achieve from it. After a few years, his fashion had over taken 140 countries and 5 continents. Cardin once said, “I was born an artiste, but I am a businessman”.
