Cardi B Reacts To Culture Appropriation Blames
Cardi B Faces Backlash From The International Indian Community
28-year-old rapper and singer Cardi B recently caught herself in a controversy when she appeared on the cover of Footwear news, promoting her latest collaboration with Reebok.
In the photo, Cardi B is holding a shoe while there are several other arms stretched out around her in a unified shape. This is a close representation of the Hindu Goddess Durga, which angered the Hindu community.
Cardi B took to her social media and apologized for her shoot and claiming that she will conduct her research on her future projects.
Cardi B said, “When I did the Reebok shoot, the creative was telling me, 'You're gonna represent a goddess,' that she represents strength, femininity and liberation. That's something that I love and I'm all about and I thought it was dope."
"I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, maybe I should've done my research and I'm sorry," Cardi said in hopes to make amends of this unseen situation. "I'm gonna do more research for the future."
The rapper further added, "And I thought that it was dope, but if people think I'm offending their culture or their religion I want to say I'm sorry. That was not my intent. I do not like disrespecting nobody's religion. I wouldn't like people to offend my religion."
The Footwear News issued an official statement soon after Cardi B spoke to her fans: "Yesterday we posted content from our exclusive Cardi B cover shoot. One of the images was intended to pay homage to Hindu goddess Durga, and our intent was to show a powerful woman. However, we realize we were not considerate of certain cultural and religious perspectives and how this could be perceived as deeply offensive."
