We take a look at some of the best performances by the maverick actor:

5. Top Gun (1986)

As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot (Tom Cruise) learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom. This film launched Tom Cruise's career. A feel-good movie that could lift the worse of moods. Tom Cruise is at his best in Top Gun.

4. Minority Report (2002)

In a future where a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes, an officer (Tom Cruise) from that unit is himself accused of a future murder. Minority Report is one of those futuristic movies that are so far ahead of their time. Tom Cruise is fantastic in the lead role and oh yes, he runs in the movie, a lot!

3. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

All the Mission: Impossible movies are great, but Fallout stands out from the rest. The sixth installment in the series sees Ethan Hunt (portrayed by Tom Cruise) as a guy who is now in his 50s and still performing stunning action-packed stunts. However, this time he gets hurt like we do when we perform a stunt to show-off in front of someone! This movie takes the audience to an adrenaline-rush, action-packed ride.

2. Risky Business (1983)

Risky Business sees a Chicago teenager (Tom Cruise) who is looking for fun at home while his parents are away, but the situation quickly gets out of hand. It's a brilliant youth-comedy where Tom Cruise is at his absolute best, sliding on socks in his underpants while jamming to a rock song in an iconic scene that is still so widely talked about.

1. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Perhaps Tom Cruise's greatest movie, ever! In Jerry Maguire, he stars as a rebelliously idealistic sports agent Jerry, who quits his firm and champions an underdog client. The movie received several nominations and wins at the Oscars and established Tom Cruise as one of the finest actors of his generation.

The birthday boy will next be seen on our cinema screens in Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the classic.
