Many of us drink cups of green tea to lose weight but is it even worth it?
When it comes to shedding weight, we have often noticed people substituting their caffeine intake, such as, their daily dose of coffee or tea, with green tea.
The days for these fitness enthusiasts are then spent consuming cups and cups of green tea almost after every meal and sometimes it is also the beverage of choice the first thing in the morning.
However, with all this green tea consumption we ought to know is the drink even good for us.
Does green tea help with weight lost?
The answer to this is – yes. Different studies have shown that the flavonoids and caffeine found in green tea helps in raising the metabolic rate of the body as well as increasing fat oxidation. This coupled with improving insulin activity, green tea has helped many people in losing weight.
However, what green tea does not do is that it does not promise immediate affects. People believe that consuming a lot of cups of green tea would magically help them in shedding a considerable amount of pounds. But that is far from the truth.
According to a study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition in 2016, overweight women consumed about 1,350 mg of green tea extract in supplements – about 15 cups of green tea – every day for 12 weeks. This only resulted in them dropping an average of 2.4 pounds.
How many cups of green tea should we drink?
Another important aspect of consuming green tea is recognizing that a lot of cups do more harm than good. Health experts believe that moderation is key and hence, two and half cups of green tea should do the trick.
Studies have found that consuming a large amount of green tea can cause liver damage, especially among people who use green tea supplements in their diets.
More importantly, it is important to consult your doctor before starting any new diet regime.
