Live Action Remake Of Mulan Will Be Released Directly On Disney+ For $30
Disney's Mulan Will Skip Majority Of The Movie Theatres Due To COVID-19
Mulan is a 2020 American action drama film based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan" and is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film of the same name.
The live-action remake of Disney's Mulan is being directed by Niki Caro and it is produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie stars Liu Yifei in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles.
Now, it is being confirmed that Disney's live-action remake of the Chinese folklore will be released directly on the streaming platform Disney+ on September 4th.
However, there is a catch. The movie will not be free and subscribers will have to pay $30 to watch it. Disney's executives confirmed that the $30 fee will be on top of the $6.99 subscriber fee for Disney Plus customers.
There are rumors that non-subscribers can pay $30 to watch the movie as well.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek said:
“We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring [Mulan] in a timely manner."
Disney is also planning on releasing Mulan in limited theatres in the countries where Disney+ is not yet present digitally.
Bob Chapek added:
"We’re looking at ‘Mulan’ as a one-off as opposed to saying there’s some new business windowing model that we’re looking at"
Last month, Disney delayed the release of Mulan indefinitely, pulling the movie from its theatrical calendar. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has not been kind to the entertainment industry and many movies and studios are struggling right now.
Disney's spokesperson at the time said that “it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis.”
For now, though, Mulan's fate has finally been decided after months of uncertainty. Watch the trailer here:
It remains to be seen how well Mulan performs on the streaming platform and whether Disney will be able to make a profit out of it.
