Selena Gomez Shares A Private Message To Mark Zuckerberg Over Clamping Down On Hate Speech
Selena Says That Facebook And Instagram Are Spreading Hate And Misinformation
Social media is a dark and scary place. If left unsupervised and unregulated, it can become a dangerous hub of hate speech, misinformation, and harassment. Selena Gomez is quite perturbed by this issue and has chosen to share a private message that she has written to Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
Celebrities are often in the spotlight on social media and each movement and action of theirs is tracked, dissected, and opined upon by the general public. Not just celebrities, even normal people face such issues of hate and harassment. They usually come under heavy criticism for their actions. It is social media, after all, that bigs you up and it's social media that cancels you in the blink of an eye.
However, many celebrities, social media influencers, and bloggers use their social media presence to raise awareness about various social issues plaguing our society and Selena Gomez is one such active proponent of that movement.
The singer is using this quarantine period to focus on how she can make a difference in the wider world, even from the comfort of her own home. Earlier this month, Selena shared that this time alone has allowed her to have "the opportunity to learn a lot about my country in ways that I never have before."
In a display of social activism, Selena shared a private message that she sent to Facebook's founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, saying the social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, are being used to spread ‘hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry’.
The Lose You To Love Me singer took to Instagram and shared the private message on her Instagram story. She said:
"Mark and Sheryl, Selena here. It’s been a while since we sat down. We have a serious problem. @Facebook and @instagram are being used to spread hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry."
"I am calling on you both to HELP STOP THIS. Please shut down groups and users focused on spreading hate speech violence and misinformation. Our future depends on it."
"This is an election year. We cannot afford to have misinformation about voting. There has to be fact-checking and accountability. Hope to hear back from you ASAP."
Selena Gomez posted this note after the big celebrity push for the "#StopHateForProfit" campaign.
