Before reading this article, take a deep breath in. Yeah, like that! Now let it out. Did you notice any difference?  Actually, our breath is a powerful tool to ease stress and anxiety. You just tried it on your own! Some breathing exercises might seem appealing to you amid this uncertain covid-time.  Breathing exercises do not take much time; you just need to pay attention to your breathing pattern. Here are some tips to begin with the simple breathing exercises.

Initially take out 5 minutes for these exercises and then add up your time as you get going.  You can also initiate with 2 minutes if 5 minutes feels too long.  Schedule and set timer for multiple times a day for conscious breathing.  Similar to other exercises, you need to wear comfortable clothes.

Deep breathing

For people who use short and shallow breaths into their chests, this exercise will help you to take longer breaths.

Steps to follow

  • First of all, get yourself comfortable by lying down on your back in bed or on the floor. Keep pillows under your head and knees. You can also try sitting on a chair with your neck, shoulders and back all straight and getting support from the back of the chair.
  • Now, place one hand on your belly and the other hand on your chest.
  • Breathe in through your nose and observe your belly rising.
  • Breathe out through your nose and feel your belly lower. Take three full rounds and observe the change.

Breathe Focus

Steps to follow

  • Close your eyes and take deep breaths. 
  • As you breathe in, imagine that the surrounding air is filled with peace and calm. While breathing out, imagine you are throwing away the stress and anxiety from your body.
  • You can also use the phrase, ‘I breathe in peace’ and ‘I breathe out stresses’ while inhaling and exhaling. This exercise can be carried out for 10 to 20 minutes.

Breathe and Count

This exercise will make you observe how long you breathe in with how long you breathe out. With the progression in time, you may increase the breathing in and out time.

Steps to follow 

  • Make yourself comfortable on a chair or floor.
  • Breathe in and count till five. Breathe out through your nose with counting till 5. Repeat this step several times. 
  • Once you are comfortable with count to five, increase your count till 10.
